WAVSL – Weather Activated Variable Speed Limit

First commissioned in 2015, the WAVSL project was a high-profile Waka Kotahi approved safety trial aimed at encouraging motorists to drive at safe and appropriate speeds according to adverse weather conditions in the Kaimai Ranges on SH29.  The WAVSL system incorporates active and existing safety enhancement systems including LED warning signs, weather monitoring sensors, CCTV cameras, speed measurement devices and vehicle presence radar. Armitage were directly engaged to provide a full design and build solution including project management and regional third-party liaison, involving among others, power providers, two roading authorities and MetService. The Kaimai Ranges presented topographical and environmental challenges namely the prohibitive cost to feed mains power to all technology nodes, in mitigation, Armitage devised a robust wind and solar power alternate solution. Armitage continue to provide all reactive service and planned maintenance activities for WAVSL including upgrades and client-driven improvements.
